Dry vs. Dehydrated Skin

Know the Difference and Address the Concern

One common confusion that many people face is the distinction between dry and dehydrated skin. Although they might sound similar, these are two distinct concerns requiring different approaches.

What is Dry Skin?

Dry skin is a skin type, which means it's largely genetic or natural. People with dry skin produce fewer oils (sebum) than those with normal or oily skin. As a result, their skin can appear rough, flaky, and may sometimes be itchy.

Make it stand out

Characteristics of Dry Skin:

  • Rough texture

  • Visible flakiness

  • Fewer visible pores

  • Might feel tight, especially after cleansing

What is Dehydrated Skin?

Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, is a skin condition. This means that any skin type - oily, combination, or dry - can be dehydrated. Dehydrated skin lacks water. It can feel tight and might show fine lines or wrinkles more prominently, but can also appear dull or rough.

Characteristics of Dehydrated Skin:

  • Dull appearance

  • Increased sensitivity

  • Temporary fine lines or deeper wrinkles

  • Feels tight but can also look oily

How to address dry skin:

Moisturise.
Use emollient-rich creams and ointments that provide a protective layer to trap in moisture.

Gentle Exfoliation.

Exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells and allow for better penetration of moisturizers.

Avoid Harsh Soaps.
Opt for gentle, fragrance-free cleansers that won't strip the skin's natural oils.

How to address dehydrated skin:

Hydrate.

Look for skincare products containing humectants like hyaluronic acid. These attract water to the skin.

Include essential fatty acids in your diet.

Avoid Over-exfoliating.
Exfoliating too often or using harsh ingredients can compromise the skin's moisture barrier, leading to dehydration.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol.
Both can dehydrate the body, affecting the skin's hydration levels.

Understanding the difference between dry and dehydrated skin is crucial in addressing the specific needs of your skin. Remember, it's always a good idea to consult with one of our skincare professionals at Harmony when you're unsure or if you feel your routine isn't working.
